Q Urbanization in the Global South GEOG350 CRITICAL ARTICLE REVIEW The purpose of the critical article review is to interpret, challenge and analyze the text of an academic journal article. The critical article review goes beyond summarizing a work’s content. It should evaluate and critique the ideas, findings and results. A critical position does not necessarily embrace a negative judgment; rather it inspects the writer’s claims. You are expected to find one journal article focusing on a topic relevant to GEOG 350. Study the article carefully and summarize the content; what is the purpose? What are the main issues? What is the central research question? What are the conclusions? Come to a precise understanding of the text, as this will provide you with a vantage point for your critical evaluation. Next, analyze your understanding and contest the arguments of the article. For example, does the article have any shortcomings in its reasoning? Do you agree with the assumptions and conclusions? Are there important matters that have been avoided? Is there a fray in the argument? Are the main points being over or understated? Are examples and illustrations effective? All these questions are the type that will facilitate your critical analysis of the article. Finally, you should synthesize the various arguments and critiques from your article. Is the article persuasive, and why? It is here that you may be inclined to introduce background knowledge from your own experiences of from other sources. A suggestion for organizing the critical article review is as follows: 1. Introduction – Introduce the topic & article. Set out the objectives and thesis statement. 2. Summarize the article. 3. Critique – This section is the core of your review. Use some of the propositions and recommendations above to shape this section. 4. Conclusion – Clinch and stress the importance of the central criticisms. The length should be approximately 1500 words. This review is worth 25% of the course.
